2022 Review in Photos
It has been an incredibly productive year on the KC Streetcar Main Street extension project! Check out our photo blog below to view progress in 2022.
Key milestones accomplished this year include:
Crews spent over 192,000 hours working on the Main Street Extension in 2022!
Track installed and completed in both northbound and southbound lanes from Pershing Road to 31st Street
A total of 10,386 feet of track has been installed along the corridor - that’s 31% of the track that will be installed in this project
A large 11-foot wide, 6-foot tall, and 300-foot long storm box was installed between 36th Street and 37th Street to mitigate stormwater concerns for future operations
55 Overhead Catenary System (OCS) foundations drilled and poured in preparation for the poles (which help power the streetcar)
A protected mobility lane was built from Pershing Road to 27th Street
The first station stop was poured - Northbound WWI Museum/Memorial stop located just north of 27th Street
Three major medians were removed in preparation for the Plaza Transit Stop between 46th Street and 49th Street
The Trolley Track Trail was relocated and paved along with the installation of retaining walls and fencing near the southern terminus (51st Street)
We look forward to continuing the progress and getting Kansas City to #Ridein2025!
The KC Streetcar Main Street Extension project would not be possible without the hard-working crews who show up every day. More than a dozen trades are represented on the project across 103 subcontractor and supplier partners. We are thankful for the team that will let Kansas City #Ridein2025!

During the first two weeks of 2022, nearly 700 tons of rail made its way to Kansas City, Missouri. Each rail stick is 80 feet long and weighs 3,100 pounds - the same size as a fully grown rhinoceros at the Kansas City Zoo!

After the rail was delivered it was time to start welding! Using a technique called Electric Flash-Butt Welding, the ends of two sticks of rail are heated to approximately 2,800 degrees and then pressed together to create the weld. Throughout the process, multiple 400’ strings were created. By using this technique, crews are limiting the number of welds that have to take place in the field which maximizes schedule efficiency.

With an additional 3.5 miles of track comes the need for more streetcars. Eight more streetcars, manufactured by CAF, will bring the fleet total to 14 and provide efficient service for the Main Street and Riverfront Extensions. The expansion includes building out current structures on site as well as constructing new structures involving a new maintenance bay, new warehouse building, three more tracks, and additional administrative and operational space. Construction of the Maintenance Facility is underway and is anticipated to be complete in early 2024.

In early February 2022, KC Streetcar Constructors relocated a portion of the Harry Wiggins Trolley Track Trail between 49th Street and 51st Street approximately 20-feet to the east of the existing trail. Additional work included constructing a retaining wall, demolishing existing trail sections, and constructing a new trail section.

It’s more than just track work! In order to mitigate existing stormwater issues, KCSC installed an 11-foot wide, 6-foot tall, 300-foot long storm sewer box between 36th Street and 37th Street on Main Street. This massive structure was installed in segments and will prevent flooding and provide stormwater relief for decades to come!

The KC Streetcar Constructors understand the importance of keeping the corridor accessible for both pedestrians and motorists and have prioritized this access along Main Street in a few ways – installing ADA pedestrian bridges across the open trench, using metal plates for maintaining driveway access for businesses, and installing temporary striping to help the traveling public better navigate the work zone.

We kicked off the project with a public meeting on March 30, 2022, to share renderings, construction activities, and the project timeline with the public. Construction communications and stakeholder outreach remain an important and ongoing aspect of the project. In 2022, the project team hosted seven Main Street Meet Ups – a monthly gathering featuring a business along the corridor to share project updates - and sent out 18 total Weekly Construction Updates to the nearly 1,000 email subscribers.
