Fresh Pavement is Coming to Main Street!

Starting Monday, March 31, mill and overlay work resumes on the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension corridor between Linwood Boulevard and 49th Street. This work will happen in phases, is expected to last several weeks, and is weather-dependent.

JM Fahey Construction Co., under the direction of KC Streetcar Constructors, will start on March 31 near the 34th Street and Main Street intersection and work south towards Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard.

Please note, this project will only mill and overlay to 49th Street/Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. 49th Street-51st Street is not within the scope of the Main Street Extension project at this time.

Traffic Changes ahead!

Work will be done in phases. Starting Saturday, March 29, traffic will have reduced lanes on Main Street between 34th Street and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard. Crews will begin working in the southbound lanes of Main Street.

Starting the week of April 7:

Traffic will have reduced lanes on Brookside Boulevard between Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard and 51st Street, and on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Main Street and Oak Street.

Starting the week of April 14:

Traffic will have reduced lanes on Main Street between Linwood Boulevard and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard. Once all southbound lanes between Linwood Boulevard and Emanuel Cleaver II Boulevard are complete, crews will flip traffic and start work in the northbound lanes of Main Street.  All of the mill and overlay work is anticipated to be completed by the end of April, weather permitting.

Crews will start as early as 5 a.m. and work as late as 9 p.m. during mill and overlay operations. Crews anticipate working on the weekends to complete this work.

What is Mill & Overlay?

Mill and overlay is when crews remove the top layer of pavement on a road and replace it with a new layer of asphalt, resulting in a smooth street. All work is weather-dependent and might pause due to rain or low temperatures. Crews completed resurfacing on Main Street between Pershing Road and Linwood Boulevard last fall.

Following completion of mill and overlay activities, new pavement striping will be installed on the Main Street Extension corridor from Pershing Road to 51st Street. This includes new pavement markings for transit exclusive lanes. More information about pavement striping will be posted on our X account, @BuildKCSC.
