Main Street Extension Tie-In

It’s TIE IN time! KC Streetcar Constructors is connecting the existing downtown streetcar system to the Main Street Extension. Work has been in progress over the last several weeks to prepare for this major milestone. Crews have been connecting the overhead catenary system (OCS) wires, repairing the Main Street Viaduct, and testing the new Pershing crossover.

This work has traffic and streetcar service impacts. There are two items to be aware about the work to complete the tie-in.

  1. Northbound Main Street will close on Monday, September 23 from Pershing Road to 20th Street for approximately 4 weeks. This closure will allow crews to complete bridge repairs to the Main Street Viaduct and complete the final track construction at this end of the extension. View the detour map for this closure to the right.

  2. Beginning September 30, KCSC will start 24-hour shifts when possible to complete the tie-in between the existing downtown streetcar line to the new Main Street Extension. There will be impacts to streetcar service during this work. Please visit the KC Streetcar Authority’s website https://kcstreetcar.org/service/ to learn more about streetcar service during the tie-in work.

 During this time, crews will:

  • Remove the existing crossover located north of Pershing Road.

  • Replace expansion joints on the Main Street viaduct.

  • Weld rail and construct the final northbound and southbound track needed in the intersection.

  • Pour the final bridge deck on the Main Street viaduct.

While this work is happening, each weekday the communications team will update this blog with work that has been completed. Follow along for the latest!
