Stages of a Streetcar Stop

We’re more than halfway there! Fifteen new stops are being constructed for the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension. To date, 9 of the 15 station stop platforms have been completed. The platform is the general foundation for the future station stop. This blog outlines how a streetcar stop comes together, the locations and progress of each future stop, and how they are a critical piece of getting us to Ride in 2025!

The KC Streetcar streetcar stops were carefully designed to meet the needs of all riders. Accessibility was at the forefront of all decisions - ensuring that stops accommodate wheelchairs, bikes, strollers, and “anything with wheels.” To do this, all stops have 100% level-boarding in at least one boarding area at the platform.

Streetcar stop platforms are the foundation for the streetcar stops and include ADA compliant level-boarding platforms, platform walls, seat walls, embedded seat wall lights, and the electrical system needed to power the future shelter. Platforms are just one component of the streetcar stop. Streetcar stops also include shelter framing and canopies, markers, seating, additional lighting, and amenities specific to each location such as trash cans and bicycle racks.  

The first shelters are expected to arrive in Kansas City Spring 2024. However, installation of the shelters will be one of the last activities completed on the project before the system is ready to Ride in 2025. 

What’s the process for building station stops? 

  1. Demolish the roadway and area around the future streetcar stop.

  2. Complete underground electrical work for future lighting and other electrical needs.

  3. Prepare the stop marker. A stop marker helps streetcar operators know where to stop the vehicle. 

  4. Form and pour the concrete platform.

  5. Form and pour concrete platform walls and seat walls.

  6. Install streetcar stop light fixtures.

  7. Once these steps are complete, the platform is officially ready for the “jewelry” or the shelter, canopy, seating, marker, lights, and other amenities such as bike racks, trash cans, etc.
