100% Track Completion Community Celebration

One step closer to #Ridein2025! On Monday, December 2, project partners, business owners, councilmembers, City leadership, community members, and the public gathered to celebrate 100% of the streetcar track installed for the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension.

The event began with speakers highlighting the project’s federal partnership success, what this project means for Kansas Citians, and the future of the KC Streetcar Authority. Remarks were made by Mayor Quinton Lucas, FTA Region 7 Administrator Carrie Butler, Councilmember and Transportation, Infrastructure and Operations Committee Chair Kevin O’Neill, City Manager Brian Platt, and Tom Gerend, Executive Director of the KC Streetcar Authority. Refreshments were available from businesses along the construction corridor including The Russell, Enchanté, YUM, a boutique bakery, and Crow’s Coffee.

A total of 36,785 feet of rail make up the 3.5-mile extension from Union Station to UMKC, including the expansion at the Kite E. Singleton Maintenance Yard (KC Streetcar Vehicle Maintenance Facility).  The close of 2024 will mark the end of heavy construction. Other construction activities will continue in 2025, including but not limited to construction of the Midtown KC Streetcar Annex, additional landscaping, completion of mill and overlay activities, and final pavement markings for transit-only streetcar lanes throughout the construction corridor.
