Traffic Impacts for the Westport Crossover

KC Streetcar Constructors (KCSC) are preparing to begin work on the streetcar track for the Westport Crossover. The Westport Crossover is track that crosses over the street and will allow the KC Streetcar to turn around at Westport Road if there is an emergency or if a streetcar needs to go in for repairs. To construct the crossover, the KC Streetcar Constructors will be doing the work in three phases starting on May 22 and lasting through mid-November, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

Phase 1

Phase 1 is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 22. This work is anticipated to be complete by the end of September, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

For this phase, KCSC will close Westport Road west of Main Street. To access Westport Road, delivery trucks and the traveling public should use 41st Street, Baltimore Avenue, and 39th Street.

The crosswalk at the southern half of the intersection of Westport Road and Main Street is temporarily closed during this work. Pedestrians should use the crosswalk at the northern half of the intersection of Westport Road and Main Street.

To access businesses on the northwest corner of Westport Road and Main Street, pedestrians traveling south should walk on the west side of Main Street. Pedestrians traveling north should walk on the east side of Main Street to 39th Street, cross to the west side of Main Street, and walk south to the businesses.

The maps below illustrate the detour around the work for both drivers and pedestrians.

Phase 2

Phase 2 is scheduled to begin Friday, September 15. This work is anticipated to be complete in 5 weeks, weather and unforeseen circumstances permitting.

The center lanes of Main Street between 39th Street and 40th Street will be temporarily closed during this work. Northbound and southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and will be pushed to the outer lanes of Main Street. Northbound traffic on Main Street will NOT be able to turn left onto Westport Road. Southbound traffic on Main Street will be able to turn right onto Westport Road. Eastbound traffic on Westport Road must turn right onto Main Street.

Delivery trucks will need to use Baltimore Avenue to detour to 39th Street or 41st Street.

The crosswalk at the southern half of the intersection of Westport Road and Main Street will be temporarily closed during this work. Pedestrians should use the crosswalk at the northern half of the intersection of Westport Road and Main Street.

Phase 3 of the Westport Crossover track work is anticipated to start early next week in the northbound lanes (east side) of Main Street between 39th Street and 40th Street. This phase of work is anticipated to take 2-3 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

While the final phase of the Westport Crossover track work is underway, the rest of the northbound track in this section will be installed. Once complete, both northbound and southbound track will be wrapped up between 39th Street and 40th Street. The map attached shows the anticipated work zone and traffic flow during this work.

The northbound lanes of Main Street between 39th Street and 40th Street will be temporarily closed during this work. Northbound and southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction and will be pushed to the west side of Main Street.

The crosswalk at the southern half of the intersection of Westport Road and Main Street will be temporarily closed during this work. Pedestrians should use the crosswalk at the northern half of the intersection of Westport Road and Main Street. There will be periods when the crosswalk will temporarily close for work. The crosswalk will reopen when safe or will be relocated to the southern half of the intersection.
